I like to think I’m a decent cook. In general, the people who eat the food I make are satisfied. For example, when I make pasta, I don’t just boil the noodles and then dump in a jar of sauce; I jazz it up with some extra garlic, bonus peppers and mushrooms, and maybe even spicy sausage. I’ll think to myself, “Yeah, this is really good!.” But then I find myself at one of my favorite Italian restaurants (maybe La Grolla), and after one bite of anything on the menu, I’m struck that I am, in fact, frightfully amateurish in the kitchen. The difference between what I throw together and what an expert creates is markedly different.
The wisdom and experience of that chef delivers an immense upgrade to the dining experience. The same concept applies to buying or selling real estate. I’m a real estate agent - of course I’m going to tell you that you should hire an expert like me instead of trying to handle the transaction yourself, but here’s how I know that recommendation is real.
I’ve been selling homes for 23 years. In the next few months, I’m going to sell my 500th property. Sure, there are agents out there who have more experience than I do, and yeah, there are agents who have sold more houses than me, but there aren’t many. I’m very highly qualified to buy and sell real estate and make sure everything goes smoothly.
But I’m only licensed in the state of Minnesota. If, for some reason, I decided to buy a house in Fargo, Sioux Falls, Des Moines, or even just across the river in Hudson, the very first thing I would do is hire the best buyer’s agent I could find—someone with a ton of experience who sells a lot of houses and knows the location better than everyone else. Someone who understands not just that state’s particular contracts but the local customs and informal ways that business gets done in that area. In short, even though I’m an expert, I would want a local specialist to help me. The same applies to selling a house. If I owned a property in another state and needed to sell, I would look for an experienced expert to list and sell my home.
If I would hire a professional to help me with a real estate transaction when it’s something I have done every day for decades, you should probably hire one as well. Trying to tackle buying or selling a property on your own is a daunting task, with many potential pitfalls along the way.
To stretch the cooking analogy, it’s like if I were actually an incredible Italian chef but someone asked for five-star Mexican food: I’d encourage them to find the right specialist to make them the tamales and birria they’re hoping for.
But I am the specialist you’re looking for if you want to buy or sell a home in Minnesota. Don’t try to do it on your own - hire me, your very own expert, to give you the best experience possible.
