I have recently been revisiting the writing of Martin Seligman. Seligman is largely heralded as the “Father of Positive Psychology.” Traditionally, psychologists were concerned with fixing problems. If you were anxious or depressed, they worked on finding solutions for you. Of course this is extremely important, as I have experienced both of those struggles and found much help available to me. Where Positive Psychology is different is that it wants to find ways to make life better, even if there aren’t major negatives to overcome. It seeks out ways to build resilience, enhance meaning and engagement, and truly make life worth living. Exciting stuff.

One of the arguments of Positive Psychology is that it’s possible to enhance your life by changing the way you think. In his book Learned Optimism, Seligman describes how to rewire your brain to help you become more optimistic. Essentially, he took the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy off of your therapist’s couch and brought them into your living room. You can learn to change your thinking from pessimism to optimism.

These strategies are different from making a vision board or simply “manifesting” the future or putting a smile on your face when life is hard. They acknowledge suffering and pain, but build real skills for overcoming adversity. For example, if you’re attempting to lose weight with an optimistic outlook, you’ll see the ups and downs of the scale over time as part of the process, a challenge to overcome, and simply a bump in the road. Whereas if you’re a pessimist, one rough weigh-in might be enough to make you give up. You didn’t expect to succeed in the first place. Optimists are more likely to push forward, even when times are tough.

If you’re aware of anything related to the real estate market or my personal life, you know that the last few years have not been all rainbows, butterflies, and sunshine. There have been some serious challenges along the way. We have all experienced times of uncertainty. And yet, I come to you today with genuine optimism. I expect the future to be better than today’s reality.

To be clear, that optimism still resides in reality. I don’t expect housing affordability to change overnight, or the political climate to feel stable. But I do think there are ways that we can work together to overcome the adversity before us. Our shared optimism can lead to better outcomes. I feel confident that I can help buyers with tight budgets find homes to purchase that meet their needs. I believe I can sell your home in an environment that is less of a seller’s market than we have experienced in a while.

I expect there to be more activity in the real estate market this year than in years past. The number of transactions has been at record lows for the last few years. It seems that outside of people needing to sell - relocation, marriage, divorce, births and deaths - not many folks have been willing to move. My prediction is that will change this year.

This is the work I do every day, with every homeowner and future homeowner I guide. A lot of life is unsettled right now. But together, we can navigate your real estate situation with optimism and hope. We won’t shy away from the realities that exist, but we can team up to produce the best outcome for you and your family. With my experience and coaching background, I can help you make clear, confident decisions - even when the market and life feel uncertain.
